Two-sided averages for which oscillation fails

چکیده
We show that in any invertible, ergodic, measure-preserving system, the two-sided square function obtained by comparing forward averages with their backwards counterparts, will diverge if the (time) length of the averages grows too slowly. This contrasts with the onesided case. We also show that for any sequence of times, certain weighted sums of the forward averages diverge. This contrasts with what would happen if the times increased rapidly and two-sided differences were considered.

Moving Averages
More generally, weighted averages may also be used. Moving averages are also called running means or rolling averages. They are a special case of “filtering”, which is a general process that takes one time series and transforms it into another time series. The term “moving average” is used to describe this procedure because each average is computed by dropping the oldest observation and includi...

متن کاملAn Approach to Extending the Hurewicz Ergodic Theorem to Two-sided Averages
In this paper, we strive to connect the ways of thinking about ergodic theory throughout most of the twentieth century to more recent works. Specifically, we consider the forward time averages seen in the Birkhoff, Hopf, and Hurewicz ergodic theorems and compare them to results about other averages considered more recently, which include going forward and backward in time. Our exploration takes...
متن کاملIntegral averages and oscillation criteria for half-linear partial differential equation
The technique of weighted integral averages, known in the oscillation theory of ordinary differential equations, is extended to the half–linear partial differential equation div(||∇u||p−2∇u) + c(x)|u|p−2u = 0. p > 1 (E) This technique is used to obtain new oscillation criteria for (E) on the unbounded domains.
متن کاملOscillation in the frequency-length relationship
The analysis shows that there is no intrinsic oscillation in the relation between frequency and length of words. The rise of oscillation is caused by using moving averages for smoothing the extremely dispersed data.
